Hmm, interesting history for them. Not the one I have in my head, but I can see it working. I like John's affection for his crew, and for Lorne especially, and his point of view from in the ship is cool.
One tiny thing - I think you forgot to close an italic tag somewhere towards the end, because the last few sections are all italic.
