I am just...oh god. This is utterly gorgeous! It's so thoughtful. Unique and...I don't even know!? I am completely charmed by your retelling. You're right; you absolutely did NOT keep the story and retell it; but you kept the message, the real point behind it, and made it into this lovely fairytale, this thoughtfully crafted fable. I can't squee enough. My absolute favorite aspect of it is how you have Dean's inner dialog making those quiet understatements about tree-Sam's silence. They truly have the ring of an Aesop's fable, or a simple telling of Greek myth.
"Sam put down roots fast. That didn’t surprise Dean at all." What an amazing opening line. And then we keep reading, and discover the double-meaning. Oh.
"Dean drove down the highway at about 26 miles per hour with people honking at him and speeding past. He didn’t want to take the risk of Sam falling out or his car falling apart –equally bad scenarios." Only danger to Sam could ever make Dean slowpoke like that!
Oh! And then he has to "bury" Sam! Oh. Oh, poor Dean! And, you still have Dean going to a nursery/greenhouse, just like the original, but now it's to get soil and bone meal for Sam!
Telling the other tree to get its branches off of him! Dean's jealous even of tree-Sammy!
Sammy's a fire-surviving tree! What a wonderful. perfect thing to write! Dean would NEVER leave Sam. Of course not! Dean thinks Sam should *really* put down roots. Of COURSE he does! And then, you used my dialog, with the same meaning, and slotted it just perfectly into the new story. It's still my words, still the same message -SamandDeanuntilthewheelsfalloff- but now in this gorgeous new story! I'm...verklempt! Just, utterly touched.
