Thank you, for such a lovely and detailed comment!
melancholia sneaking through the whole thing that's quite delicious, and not something we see a lot of when it comes to Jack
I've only written post-DMC and AWE, and my version of Jack is a little darker than some, sometimes :-) I love penknife's take on these characters, and that hidden longing for connection on Jack's part is a thread I see in her work. And always, of course, he's snarky and elusive.
Jack's honesty and Will's pretense of not knowing it for what it is
Will is a good man, and he's protecting both of them here. He's uncertain of what he wants, what Elizabeth wants, and of course of what might happen should they ever choose to sail with Jack Sparrow :-)
the amount of hope that comes in at the end from just the idea of two pairs of boots on the stairs is wonderfully unexpected and makes me a happy happy reader
High praise indeed from a reader who "doesn't usually go in for J/W/E"! I truly appreciate that :-) I couldn't resist adding that last paragraph, being something of a romantic myself. penknife has written other wonderful J/W/E stories, with the three of them either sailing together or continuing these clandestine encounters, so hopefully it fits with her 'verse.
